MEDICINE HAT, AB – Josh Van Mulligen is relishing the opportunity to play for his hometown team and he’s already got his eyes set on the next level.

The young defenceman is in his second year with the Medicine Hat Tigers, selected 39th overall in the 2020 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Since making his WHL debut on Oct. 15, 2021, Van Mulligen has played in 68 games with the Tigers to date, and he’s enjoying the chance to play for his local team.

“It means a lot, growing up here, being a fan and coming to a lot of games,” said Van Mulligen on Tuesday. “I’ve always dreamed of playing here and to finally be able to make the team is pretty special.”

Van Mulligen has seen an increase in playing time during the 2022-23 regular season, dressing for all 48 of the Tigers games, allowing him to make improvements for the next level.

The six-foot-two blue-liner will become eligible for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in the summer. His eyes are set on playing professional hockey.

“I want to play in the NHL,” said the Medicine Hat local. “It will take a lot of hard work and dedication but obviously I’m willing to do it.”

Van Mulligen is more than just a hard worker and dedicated, says captain Owen MacNeil.

“He’s pretty mature and it shows in his game, we’re pretty lucky to have him back there,” said MacNeil when asked about his teammate.

That maturity, hard work and dedication will be essential for Van Mulligen to continue pursuing his goal of playing in the National Hockey League.
