MEDICINE HAT, AB – Extreme weather and the impact it has on residents is a major focus for the city this year.

The Emergency Advisory Committee met this morning to discuss the city’s disaster response.

Of the three risks identified, severe wind poses the highest risk.

Last summer, a tornado blew through Medicine Hat and surrounding area causing extensive damage and knowing out power.

Extreme heat was the second serious risk to residents. The city’s director of emergency management says local fatalities and illnesses related to extreme heat has increased over the last two years.

As for the risk associated with wildland fires and pandemics, they have decreased but remain in the top three. The risk of wildland fires have decreased due to increased soil moisture and precipitation.

The committee will conduct training exercises for these risks over the next six to eight months before they finalize their plans.
