City makes sand available for residents to use on sidewalks

Jan 30, 2023 | 9:41 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Weather swinging from bitter cold to ice-melting warmth – not to mention a little freezing rain – has played havoc with city streets and sidewalks.

While the City of Medicine Hat is responsible for clearing the snow and ice off the streets and trails, residents are responsible for the sidewalks.

According to the Medicine Hat Police Service Municipal Bylaw & Enforcement Section, residents are required to remove snow, ice and other obstructions from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours.

The city is now making sand available to residents to help melt icy sidewalks, a move that will also save people from buying their own products.

Four yellow sand bins have been placed throughout the city.

The yellow boxes are identified on the city’s iMap and can be found at

  • Big Marble Go Center, North parking lot
  • Fourth Avenue NE, behind Shamrock Bottle Depot
  • Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede, parking lot west of Kinplex
  • Southlands Drive SE, near Chartwell Place SE

Anyone who wants to take sand is asked to bring their own shovel and container and take a maximum of of one five-gallon bucket of sand per visit.
