New COVID-19 cases in Alberta down more than 20 per cent

Exactly 200 fewer COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Alberta in the most-recent seven-day reporting period than one week earlier.

As of Jan. 23, there are 778 Albertans currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 29 of those people are in ICU. Last week there were 856 in hospital and 29 in ICU.

There were 648 new cases over the most recent seven-day period, compared to 848 last week.

There have been 5,465 COVID deaths recorded in Alberta over the course of the pandemic, a decrease from last week’s figure. That has previously happened as some deaths get reclassified.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 37 new cases in the South Zone in the update.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 11.9 new cases per 100,000 people is lower than the provincial average of 14.7.

There have been 40,913 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 509 deaths, one new in this update.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.4 per cent of all people have received one dose, 75.9 per cent have received two doses and 38.7 per cent have received three doses.
