HAT Smart program makes changes to its 2023 rebate program

Jan 26, 2023 | 3:02 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Slight changes have been made to the HAT Smart home incentive program this year to allow more residents to take advantage of its benefits.

The energy conservation program provides homeowners incentives for making energy-efficient upgrades like replacing windows or adding solar panel systems.

To qualify for a rebate in the HAT Smart program you will be required to complete an EnerGuide home report in advance.

Recommendations from that EnerGuide report can save Hatter’s between five and 30 per cent on their energy bills if followed.

Last year homeowners could claim $400 of the $450 cost of the report.

This year only $200 will be available claim.

This will allow more people to participate in the program.

“So if they’re going to do some windows and they do an EnerGuide report when they submit their rebate for windows they also submit their rebate to greener homes as well as their EnerGuide report or costs and so they’ll be rebated back through the Greener Homes instead of through Hat Smart. So they still get their money back,” said Patrica Bradley, HAT Smart administrator.

“They’re not out of pocket for too long but it does allow more people to be part of the HAT smart program.”

Furnaces and air conditioners have been pulled from the program as they cost of the report to claim the rebate costs more than the actual rebate itself.

They have instead moved those items to the Scratch and Win program allowing residents an opportunity to still receive a rebate.

The program is now entering its 15th year.

A reminder to homeowners to reserve your funds in advance to make sure you receive your rebate.
