Jan 23, 2023 | 4:15 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Voices are warmed up and the guitars are tuned for Medicine Hat’s annual winter celebration of local musical talent.

The Tongue on the Post Folk Music Festival runs from Jan. 23-29. Muriel Erick, performing on Tuesday evening, sums it up by asking where else would you want to be but Tongue on the Post?

“I think this is everything that we work for with live music in our city all in one week. It’s all here,” she said outside Medalta on Monday. “And it isn’t just about folk, I know it’s put on by the folk club, it isn’t just about folk music. It’s everything about music in one lovely week.”

“So Friday night is the singer-songwriter night. That’s a free event I don’t know why anybody wouldn’t come. And that’s all these different genres of music and entertainers just instrumentalists singing. Everything in one neat little package and some surprises; there’s some surprises.”

The festival starts tonight with Supper and Song at the Rosewood Bistro and Medalta is the place to be for the rest of the week.

Erick, part of local band Phoenix, will play on Tuesday with Connie Jean and Netty Mack as the Ladies of the Folk Music Club Board present their original songs and stories in one of Medalta’s historic kilns.

Performances continue at the kilns throughout the week including Derek Hintz and Jay Bowcott on Wednesday and Don Hill teaching throat singing on Thursday.

“How fascinating is that?” Erick asks. “I want to know how to do that. If you’ve ever wanted to know how to do that, come here on Thursday.”

The grand finale headliner show is on Saturday featuring Kyle McKearney, Misery Mountain Boys and TAYLR.
