Downtown YMCA closed after fuse blows on electricity box

UPDATE: The YMCA says the weight and cardio areas of the building have reopened to the public this afternoon. The pool and hot tubs will not be available so staff can assess any damage sustained.

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The downtown YMCA is closed this Monday after a fuse blows on the electrical utility box.

City crews were working on the building’s utility box when smoke flared and one-third of the power went out. It also caused the pumps that control the pool and hot tub to overheat.

Sharon Hayward, CEO of the YMCA of Medicine Hat, says staff noticed smoke at the YMCA around 8 a.m. They initially believed it was a small electrical fire, says Hayward, but the fire department was able to confirm this was not the case.

The building was evacuated as a precaution and is temporarily closed for the rest of the day. No one was injured.

The facility will be reopened as soon as possible and more updates will be provided when possible, says the YMCA.
