United Way Spirit of Christmas Feast open to all

Dec 22, 2022 | 3:53 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – An event that started on the idea that nobody should be alone at Christmas is marking a milestone this year. The United Way Spirit of Christmas Feast turns 10 this year.

Volunteers will be at the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub around noon on Dec. 25, to prep the traditional 5 p.m. dinner for anyone who wants to attend

Jeremy Silver is the lead coordinator of the feast and says anyone looking for a place to go at Christmas is welcome to attend.

“We made it as easy as possible. We know a lot of events require sign up, our event never has, never will,” he says. “There’s no proof of finances that are needed. No sign up, we don’t need to know your name. We just don’t want anybody to be alone for Christmas.”

It will be a traditional Christmas meal of turkey, stuffing, potatoes and a little roast beef donated by Deluxe Meats & Seafood, Silver says.

Silver has been involved since the first feast. He says that in 2009 he was very ill and local people helped him. He sees this as paying it forward, saying he was honoured that the community took care of him and has since always tried to give back.
