Shelter capacity remains under the limit during cold snap

MEDICINE HAT, AB — More people have been seeking shelter from the cold this week at the Mustard Seed in Medicine Hat.

While they’ve not quite reached capacity, managing director Colette Eirich says in times of extreme cold, they would always find a way to accommodate anyone seeking to get out of the cold.

Normally, the Mustard Seed operate 12-hour shifts between its facility on Eighth Street S.E. and the Allowance Avenue location.

But during this cold spell, they’ve opted to remain in the shelter facility full-time.

“When we get the cold alerts like this, we keep them 24/7 at the shelter on Eighth Street Southeast,” explains Eirich.

“We transfer our food over and we feed them there” adds Eirich, which means clients don’t have to shuttle between the two facilities in this weather.

Clients will be treated to a visit from Santa and some Christmas stockings, in addition to a turkey meal on Friday.

Eirich says she continues to be amazed and thankful for the generous support from business and individuals, saying Medicine Hat is “amazing.”
