Influenza cases and hospitalizations still rising in AHS Central Zone

Influenza cases and the number of hospitalizations due to the flu are continuing to rise in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone.

According to Alberta Health, there are 795 cases of influenza in the Central Zone as of December 10, up by 140 cases over the past week.

Hospitalizations in the Central Zone due to the flu have risen to 135 over the past week, up from 104 the week before.

Intensive Care Unit admissions are now 12, up from 11 the week before, while the number of deaths related to the flu in the Central Zone this past week increased from four to six.

Elsewhere throughout the province, the Calgary Zone has 2,488 cases of influenza with 572 hospitalizations, 61 ICU admissions and 15 deaths.

The Edmonton Zone has 2,145 cases of influenza, 426 hospitalizations, 41 ICU admissions, and 13 flu-related deaths.

The North Zone currently has 1,282 cases of influenza, 169 hospitalizations, 16 ICU admissions, and five deaths.

The South Zone has 393 cases of influenza as of December 10, with 106 hospitalizations, 10 ICU admissions, and six flu-related deaths.
