Pen to paper: letters for seniors one idea for #HatforHope2022 campaign

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Health Foundation is always a busy place but staff the team still manages to come up with new ways to spread joy and kindness. The current Holidays at the Hospital initiative is combining something new and something old.

The foundation is encouraging people to participate in the acts of kindness challenge Hat for Hope and to share their acts of kindness on social media and tag it with #HatforHope2022.

There is a list of a dozen suggested acts such as shovelling the sidewalk for a neighbour or leaving a glowing review for your favourite local business.

“There are all kinds of fun little ideas on there,” says executive director Heather Bach.

The idea the foundation and Bach are highlighting this week is a throwback to a different era.

“The letters for seniors I think is a brilliant idea and I think COVID really took us back to our basics and reaching out and learning how to get back to those simple things,” she says. “Believe it or not, we do have a group of patients that have a long stay. Some of them can be upwards of three months in our hospital so giving us a nice letter or a card personalized, takes them back to their youth as well.”

“But it’s a chance for them to connect with the outside world and know that people are cheering them on and hoping they get home soon. So it’s just a nice kind of gesture. I think we all appreciate something personal like that.”

If you plan to write a letter, Bach says you can send it to the Medicine Hat Health Foundation and they will distribute them around the hospital.

Address the letter to:
