Stronger Foundations is a 10-year strategic plan that the government indicated in a news release, will “put Alberta on track to increase affordable housing units by 25,000.”

The launching of the Affordable Housing Partnership Program looks to build and deliver affordable housing for seniors, families, individuals with low income, developmental disabilities and victims of violence.

According to the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, Jeremy Nixon, this program will help address the affordability crisis.

Nixon explained, “Our government is committed to ensuring that affordable housing is accessible across the province.”

He continued, “By partnering with housing providers, non-profit organizations, municipalities and private companies, I am confident that we will be able to address the needs of Albertans. I am thrilled to see steps being taken to help implement our 10-year affordable housing strategy, Stronger Foundations.”

The Affordable Housing Partnership Program is currently taking development applications that have an affordable or specialized housing component from private, non-profit and public sectors.

Projects can include additions, renovations, conversions, redevelopment or new construction.

Chief Administrative Officer for the Lethbridge Housing Authority, Robin James said in a news release, “We are pleased to see the Government of Alberta is moving ahead on its commitment to provide safe, stable affordable housing for those in need.”

James added, “Through this new funding program, we look forward to pursuing partnership opportunities with government to provide more affordable housing in our region. An investment into affordable housing is an investment in Albertans.”
