M.D. OF ACADIA #34, AB — The Alberta government is partnering with the Municipal District of Acadia, the Special Areas board and the Canada Infrastructure Bank to continue planning a large-scale irrigation project for east-central Alberta.

A total of $7 million is being invested in a two-year study that will explore the feasibility of the project, which proposes to increase water storage by pumping water from the Red Deer River into new reservoirs.

Peter Rafa, reeve with the Municipal District of Acadia #34, says the possibility of restoring their region by expanding irrigation, would be a boon for everyone.

“Population-wise, the farms are getting bigger, there’s not as many people, our communities are getting smaller, the schools are dwindling, our hospital; everything’s suffering so this would be such a big boost for us and also for the local southern area like Medicine Hat for all the businesses there right?” says Rafa.

Rafa says the project would also expand recreational opportunities in the region.

An engineer will be hired to develop conceptual drawings over the next 24 months.
