Eagle Butte teacher: if you know the movie Elf, you’ll love Elf the Musical

MEDICINE HAT, AB – You know a holiday movie has become a classic when it’s turned into a musical. One of the most recent examples of that is the Will Ferrell favourite, Elf.

About 60 students from Eagle Butte High School and schools in Redcliff, Seven Persons and Irvine have been rehearsing Elf the Musical since September.

“There are a lot of elements from Elf the movie you’ll see in Elf the Musical they’ve also packaged it in a little different way,” co-director and Eagle Butte teacher Scott Raible says. “So there’s all these original songs that really kind of capture the essence of it. They’re fun songs, they’re Christmas songs. And so if you’re familiar with Elf the movie you will love Elf the Musical because it’s a different take on a classic.”

The show runs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Esplanade at 6:30 p.m.

Raible says the story embodies the Christmas spirit. He says they chose Elf because it’s “something the community can get behind and something that our students would have a great time and a lot of fun putting together and performing.”

He says students have taken ownership of the roles on stage, behind the scenes and as part of the pit band and it’s been great to see them make the production their own as they take it from the screen to the stage.

Raible adds there are also a number of parent and teacher volunteers and some from the Prairie Rose Public Schools head office are also helping.

Tickets are available at tixx.ca and the Esplanade box office.
