Unemployment rate down in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat for November

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The unemployment rate in Alberta saw a significant jump last month, but locally, the rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region was down.

In November, the jobless rate for the province was 5.8 per cent. That’s up from 5.2 per cent in October 2022.

For the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region, the unemployment rate for November was 2.9 per cent, compared with 3.3 per cent in October. The full labour statistics for the province are available from the Government of Alberta.

Below is how each economic region in Alberta fared in November, with the October unemployment rate listed in parenthesis:

  • Red Deer: 6.2% (5.5)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 5.6% (5.7)
  • Calgary: 5.4% (5.6)
  • Edmonton: 4.9% (4.9)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 4.5% (5.7)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 3.9% (5.6)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 2.9% (3.3)

Nationally, Statistics Canada said the economy added 10,000 jobs.

The latest labour force survey showed a national unemployment rate of 5.1 per cent in November. That’s down from 5.2 per cent in October.

Statistics Canada said employment rose in multiple industries, including finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing, manufacturing, and in information, culture and recreation. It fell in the construction industry, as well as wholesale and retail trade.
