MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat is asking residents to help “Shape Where People Vape.”

An online survey has already attracted more than 400 responses from residents, as the city looks to update its current smoking bylaw.

Shona Dickie is the manager of community supports with the City of Medicine Hat.

She says the current bylaw doesn’t include festivals or events, or places like campgrounds, golf courses, and sidewalks, among others.

They’re also trying to fill gaps in provincial legislation that came in last year.

“We’re just trying to catch up with those and fill some of the holes in the provincial bylaws,” says Dickie.

“Municipal governments have the ability to decide additionally where we would like to put some restrictions in place and we wanted to align that and also bring up some areas that were missed in the original bylaw,” explains Dickie.

In addition to the online survey, paper copies are available at the Big Marble Go Centre.

Once the public consultation is complete, staff will compile the results as they prepare a recommendation that will go forward to city council.
