New COVID-19 cases down in Alberta this week

The number of Albertans hospitalized with COVID-19 has gone down this week but the number of those inpatients in ICU has gone up.

The province posted its weekly update on Wednesday, reporting that 1,077 Albertans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 46 of those people are in ICU. Last week those numbers were 1,107 and 40.

There were 1,314 new cases in Alberta over the past seven days, down from 1,358 the previous period, and 39 deaths, down from 40.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 72 new cases in the South Zone in the past seven days, down one from 73 in the previous period.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 23.1 new cases per 100,000 people is below the provincial average of 29.7.

There have been 40,411 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 474 deaths.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.2 per cent of all people have received one dose, 75.8 per cent have received two doses and 38.3 per cent have received three doses.
