Students leading the way for McCoy’s staging of Something Rotten

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Monsignor McCoy High School presents Something Rotten on stage this weekend, but the work the students have put into it is anything but rotten.

The Renaissance-set show follows two brothers trying to find success writing plays but constantly being overshadowed by the works of William Shakespeare and a bitter battle ensues.

The production is led by students and used as a training ground for those in the production arts program. Everything from the acting, makeup, choreography and technical aspects are mainly student planned operated and organized.

Stage manager Abigail Duhaime says it’s been a wonderful experience and a learning one.

“I was in plays when I was younger and most of the adults did everything and I never really understood what went on behind the scenes,” she said prior to rehearsal Wednesday. “And now that I’m in that position I can actually figure out what’s going on and how much, how difficult it is to do it and how much effort and work is put into it.”

Duhaime said she’s also been able to take what she’s learned from the production into her job, which has helped make her more comfortable working on her own and with others.

Nathan Seto, the technical director said he’s enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere working with students has created and how they are all coming together.

“I feel like working with other students you get to bond with them more than like a teacher because … it’s more like a teacher-student kind of thing. Where if you have friends you have more of a friendly and social environment to work in. It’s really nice to have friends and stuff working up {in the booth}.”

The students will perform a show each for Notre Dame Academy and St. Mary’s School students Thursday and Friday before public performances at the Medicine Hat College Eresman Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available at the school’s office and website.
