Ways to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Daylight hours have been getting shorter as of late in Medicine Hat, with that can bring the onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder in some people.

By definition, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes with the changing of the seasons, beginning and ending around the same times each year.

Symptoms can be related to your mood such as feeling less motivated, more irritable and general fatigue. Although some see physical signs such as an increase in headaches, stomach issues and other bodily aches and pains.

Registered psychologist, Angela Irvine says things like keeping your regular routine and maintaining a proper diet can make a difference throughout the season.

“Especially this time of year leading up to the holiday season we tend to let some things go, because it’s the excitement of the season,” she says. “We maybe aren’t eating as well as we should be, we’re staying up later, and our routine is thrown off. So I think we need to be aware of those self-care activities.”

Irvine also suggests trying online meditation courses, as well as locally available physical activity classes to assist in maintaining a healthy routine.
