Senior targeted in violent robbery and carjacking in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) is investigating after a senior citizen was the target of a violent robbery and carjacking in downtown Lethbridge.

The LPS responded to a 911 call reporting that an elderly woman had been assaulted in the parking lot of a downtown bank at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Further investigation by police determined that a 77-year-old woman had parked her white Hyundai Santa Fe SUV in the parking lot of the Bank of Montreal in the 600 block of 4 Avenue South.

Police say as she walked toward the bank, a man allegedly grabbed her from behind, forcibly took her keys, and pushed her to the ground. Police say the suspect then stole her car and sped away. The elderly woman was injured in the assault.

Police later found the SUV abandoned along Highway 3 just east of Lethbridge on Saturday, November 5, 2022.

Police are asking for help to locate the suspect, who is described as a young male in his late teens with black hair. The LPS says he was wearing dark clothing and a dark toque.

A surveillance image of the suspect was obtained by police, but officials say the quality is limited because it was taken from a distance.

Lethbridge police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information on the suspect.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to contact police at 403-328-4444 and reference file 22024253. Anonymous online tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at www.p3tips.com.
