New COVID cases down sharply in South Zone

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The South Zone has seen a dramatic drop in COVID-19 cases this week.

There were nearly half as many new COVID cases confirmed in the zone this week compared to last.

The province reported Wednesday that 1,095 Albertans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 24 of those people are in ICU. Last week those numbers were 1,118 and 28.

There were 1,323 new cases in Alberta over the past seven days, down from 1,461 the previous period and 36 deaths, up from 36.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 73 new cases in the South Zone in the past seven days, down sharply from 137 in the previous period.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 23.4 new cases per 100,000 people is below the provincial average of 29.9.

There have been 40,129 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 456 deaths.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.2 per cent of all people have received one dose, 75.7 per cent have received two doses and 37.8 per cent have received three doses.
