REDCLIFF, AB – Eligible voters in the Brooks-Medicine Hat byelection are now able to cast their votes ahead of election day on Nov. 8. Five days of advance polls began yesterday, and voters can mark their ballots at one of three locations.

Over 200 paid staff were hired and trained over the past several weeks, and were tasked with securing polling stations and building election kits.

Any eligible voter can vote at any advance polling station from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until this Saturday.

A major change has been made for this byelection and every subsequent provincial election: identification is now mandatory for all voters. Elections Alberta says ID was not a requirement in the past, but the change was implemented in March. Officials are reminding voters to bring ID with your physical address when you go to vote. This is especially important for rural voters, as P.O. boxes will not be accepted at the polling station.

Pamela Renwick, deputy chief electoral officer with Elections Alberta, says there are advantages to both advance polling and voting on election day.

“Advance definitely gives them a lot of options if election day doesn’t work for them, but they will find usually our election day locations are closer to them,” Renwick says. “So if they’re a little bit concerned that advanced locations are too far, take a look at their election locations, they might be a lot closer and work better for them.”

The three advance polling stations are located in Brooks, Bassano and Redcliff. Their addresses are:

  • Heritage Inn & Suites Brooks (1217 2 St. W, Brooks)
  • Pioneer Damsiters Drop-in Centre (317 2 Ave., Bassano)
  • Royal Canadian Legion #6 Redcliff (302 Broadway Ave. W, Redcliff)
