Police share tips for a spooky but safe Halloween night

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There are only a few days away from the spookiest day of the year, and Medicine Hat police are sharing some tips if you are planning on trick or treating this Halloween.

This will be the first full-scale Halloween since 2019, and police are anticipating many children and families going door to door for some sweet treats. The police service is reminding Halloween-goers that there are still rules in place to ensure everyone has a great time that evening.

Sgt. Adam Gregory says motorists should raise their cautiousness level and pay attention to all the pedestrians out on the sidewalks and crossing the street. If you’re wearing a costume, make sure you dress appropriately, not only for the weather but for safety as well.

“If any of the kids’ costumes can have visible reflectors on them anywhere, that’s a real big benefit and that will help the roadway safety for both the traffic and the pedestrian,” says Gregory.

Always stay in groups, with smaller children in the care of a parent or trusted adult. Gregory adds the police service will be out in the community keeping an eye on things that night too.

“Police will be out and about on Halloween, and they’ll be paying extra attention into our neighbourhood areas again, making sure the roadways and the sidewalks are safe, and they will be there if there is any kind of odd situation that kids can attend to the police to notify them and get any kind of help they need.”

Gregory suggests having a phone and flashlight on you as you go door to door, and for homeowners to turn their lights on to signal the home is approachable. Lastly, Gregory says to be respectful of other people’s property and of each other, and most of all, have fun!
