Alberta COVID hospitalizations continue to climb

Oct 20, 2022 | 11:12 AM

The number of people in Alberta hospitals being treated for COVID-19 is growing.

The province reported Wednesday that 1,070 Albertans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 33 of those people are in ICU. Last week those numbers were 1,014 and 31.

There were 1,387 new cases in Alberta over the past seven days and 32 deaths.

Last week, Dr. Dan Gregson, an infectious diseases physician, said a new wave of COVID coupled with a big wave of seasonal flu would really stress the health system.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 107 new cases in the South Zone in the past seven days, up from 59 in the previous period.

There have been 39,895 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 450 deaths.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone (per 100,000 people) is 34.4, slightly above the province-wide rate of 31.4.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.2 per cent of all people have received one dose, 75.7 per cent have received two doses and 37.5 per cent have received three doses.
