Rattlers Roundup: Home openers for volleyball teams

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat College Rattlers volleyball teams opened their schedules this weekend, each playing home-and-home series against the Ambrose Lions.

On Friday night in Calgary, the women’s team was shut out three sets to zero, and the men’s team fell three sets to one.

It was the same result the next night at home, the first regular season games at the Snake Pit since the 2019-20 season.

The teams play the SAIT Trojans twice next week, on the road Friday and back home on Saturday.

The Rattlers cross-country teams ran their way to strong performances in Calgary at the St. Mary’s Open.

The women’s team placed second, just one point behind the host St. Mary’s squad. Rookies Becky Ross and Maddy Scrimger placed second and third, respectively, while veterans Cheldynn Molnar in 14th and Pyper Gill in 16th rounded out the MHC scorers.

The men’s team placed fourth, led by Brannon Sumner in 16th place. Sumner was followed by Jaiden Romaniuk (18th), Gage Smith (20th), Harrison Lawson (24th), Justin Jaeger (26th), Carson Schiller (28th) and Shintaro Iwata (34th).

The Rattlers basketball team opened their seasons in Calgary on Friday taking on the SAIT Trojans. The men’s team won an 89-86 barnburner, led by Ethan Robinson with 29 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. The women’s team fell 72-52. No other details were available for the game.

The teams play their home opener this Friday at the Snake Pit.

As basketball and volleyball teams open their home schedules, the Rattlers soccer teams closed theirs out this weekend.

The women’s soccer team fell 2-1 on Saturday to the Augustana Vikings before losing 7-1 to the Red Deer Queens on Sunday. The men’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Red Deer Kings on Sunday.

Both teams close out their regular seasons on Saturday in Calgary against the Ambrose Lions
