MEDICINE HAT, AB – Portable toilets that were part of a pilot program this summer and fall are being removed from Towne Square and several city-operated public washrooms have been closed for the season.

The Towne Square pilot program was launched in July and was supposed to last just one month. It was extended to accommodate other events in the downtown core such as the Together Again Festival and Ribfest. In a news release, the city says the community’s desire for a public washroom in the downtown area has been widely recognized and officials will continue to explore appropriate and sustainable public washroom solutions for the downtown area.

The portable washrooms will be removed on Oct. 17.

Washrooms will remain open in Police Point Park, Kin Coulee Toboggan Hill and shelter, Southview Community Park, Strathcona Island Park, Strathcona boat launch pit toilet (pilot), Echo Dale (one pit toilet at the boat lake and one pit toilet at the campground), and portable toilets will remain at WestVue and Saratoga off-leash areas.
