Review: Evil Dead The Musical a laugh-filled and blood-soaked romp

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Calls of “Join Us” ring out midway through Act One of Medicine Hat Musical Theatre’s Evil Dead The Musical and you’d be wise to listen.

Opening Friday at Medicine Hat Musical Theatre playhouse, the story of Evil Dead is your pretty basic horror plot. A group of college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods and all sorts of evil happens. It departs from the horror genre by going over the top throughout in its comedy and gore. There’s a reason this is the only musical that comes with a splatter zone – it’s bloody, very bloody.

The first half is all about setting up the action in the second. It’s highlighted by the performances of Roy Devore as our hero Ash, particularly when his hand gets a mind of its own. Tristan Glasier also stands out, especially while and after turning evil. Keep an ear out for some of her puns that may come in handy.

More people arrive at the cabin and more people turn evil in Act Two, including Ed, the poor, pathetic and eventually dead bit part demon, played by Rob Olson. Interspersed in that is a big dance number and more special effects that show how far Medicine Hat Musical Theatre has come since staging the same show in 2011.

It all leads to Ash’s final showdown with demons, a moment befitting of an S-Mart employee.

Allie Kapcala (as Linda), Nick Kush (Scott), Sara Latimer (Shelly), Faith Countryman (Annie), Ryan Holdaway (Jake) and Devon Burdeyney (Prof. Knowby/Moose) also star, with Bretton Labash, Dallas Johnson, Lauryn Johnson, Kate Gauthier-Riggs and Logan Maser Heidrick playing ninjas.

The Evil Dead series is in good hands at the playhouse.

Following Wednesday’s media night show the curtain officially rises on Friday for the first of nine shows from Oct. 14-29. For tickets, showtimes and more information visit mhmtheatre.com.
