City to hold full-scale emergency exercise

Sep 30, 2022 | 7:20 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat along with several community partners will participate in a full-scale emergency exercise next week.

The exercise scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5 is designed to practice and evaluate emergency preparedness.

Participating in the exercise which will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be Methanex, South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue, Canadian Pacific Railway, the Medicine Hat Remand Centre and Alberta Health Services.

Merrick Brown, the director of emergency management with the city says all services including emergency services will be fully operational during this training exercise. Brown says “the City places the highest priority on everyone’s health and safety. This type of training is the best way to prepare our staff in the event of a large-scale emergency in our community.”

Brown says the windstorm in July is an example of the need to continue building skills that are applicable to numerous types of emergency situations.

The training area will start in the CP Railyard at the intersection of South Railway Street and Kingsway Avenue SE.

Notice boards will be displayed around the rail yard, advising members of the public that training is occurring. The exercise will also take place in areas of the SE Hill and the downtown.

A detour will be in place around the railyard, however, all businesses will be open while the exercise is taking place.
