Sep 30, 2022 | 8:31 AM

The earliest “credible” mention of coffee – at least of coffee prepared in a way similar to how it’s done today – was in the mid 15th century in Yemen. That’s 500 years of humans roasting beans and brewing coffee to help them conquer their days.

Saturday, October 1, is International Coffee Day and what better way to espresso your love for a good, caffeinated beverage than to check out some of Medicine Hat’s local bean scenes.

1. Station Coffee Company

Station Coffee Company is a locally owned coffee hub that opened Downtown in 2013. Since then, Station Coffee Company – colloquially referred to as “Station” – has become a popular destination for coffee lovers. Housed in a 100-year-old building, the business offers a unique and stylish environment to sit down with friends with its rustic feel and large windows, plus seating on a small front patio!

Station specializes in handcrafted coffees and teas. You can find their full menu on their website.

2. Madhatter Coffee Roastery

Madhatter Coffee Roastery was started by Myra and her brother Murray and immediately made a name for itself. Not only can you grab and coffee and have a seat in this eclectic location, but you can also purchase coffee beans! You can purchase them whole or let Madhatter do the work for you.

Today, it’s run by girlfriend-boyfriend team, Katrina and Josh. They’ve extended what Madhatter offers the community in the form of a Home Coffee Plan! This is a bi-weekly or monthly subscription service where coffee is delivered right to your door. You can customize your Home Coffee Plan to whatever your needs are on their website.

3. Café Verve

Café Verve is a popular, locally owned specialty coffee house on Dunmore Road next to McBride’s Bakery. It describes itself as a place where “coffee is created by people with spirit, energy and conviction.” This coffee house has an interesting feel, as it also functions as an art gallery curated with pieces from local artists and also hosts live music performances throughout the week. In addition to offering all the drinks one would expect from a coffee house, they also feature seasonal drinks (Pumpkin Spice flavours are in for your Fall vibes checklist.)

4. Nosh.

One of Medicine Hat’s newest coffee stops! Nosh is located Downtown in the newly opened Kolab+ building (formerly the bus depot on 2nd Street. Nosh describes itself as a socialhouse, offering sandwiches, pastries and handcrafted coffee.

Iced, hot or espresso – you can find it at Nosh in the heart of Downtown Medicine Hat.

5. Zucchini Blossom Market & Cafe

Zucchini Blossom Market & Café is a beloved stop on 3rd Street in Riverside. You can’t miss it on your way to or from Finlay Bridge, with the bright ZB on the front of the building. In contrast to some of the other coffee locations in town, Zucchini Blossom offers more of a traditional restaurant atmosphere. In addition to a full list off coffee and tea options, this business also has a full food menu that you can view online!
