MEDICINE HAT, AB – Registration is now open for city fall and winter soccer programs, a time the technical director hopes will be a new dawn for the game locally.

Sam Heap of the Medicine Hat Soccer Association says they want the local soccer community to grow.

They think they have a program for everyone, Heap says, whether you’re just starting out playing the beautiful game, rejoining after time away or on a more competitive track.

“At the younger age groups, you learn a lot of skills needed for life so leadership, understanding a team environment as well as the individual environment. On the soccer front for the recreation side, it’s a lot of fun as well. They get out, they score a lot of goals, lot of smiling faces, working hard,” Heap says. “On the (Rattlers Academy Soccer Club) side, which is our competitive program, there’s more of a pathway to coming to be a Rattler or into university or college soccer or above if you’ve got the right talent.”

Heap, who also coaches the Medicine Hat College Rattlers teams, adds that part of his role is to develop the coaching side of the association for this year and beyond.

He’d like to see people love it like he does and make a career out of it.

“We’re trying to create a whole round circle in the community, as in players that come through then become coaches and then they coach the next crew,” he says.
