Kenney staying quiet on Madu’s support of protesters, ‘freedom convoys’ fighting COVID restrictions

EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is declining to weigh in on one of his cabinet ministers lauding protesters and so-called “freedom convoys” fighting COVID-19 restrictions.

Kenney says if anyone wants to hear more on the views of Labour Minister Kaycee Madu, they should contact him.

Madu took to Twitter earlier this week to urge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to end the lingering COVID rules on foreign travellers coming to Canada.

He also thanked protesters and freedom convoys, who tied up border points and downtown Ottawa earlier this year to protest COVID rules.

The protest that tied up the Alberta-U.S. border point at Coutts ended in February shortly after RCMP made multiple arrests and seized weapons and ammunition.

Four men have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder at the blockade.

Madu was appointed Alberta’s justice minister in August 2020 and was shuffled out of the job in February.

His office did not respond to a request for an interview.
