More than $50,000 raised on Brown Bag Lunch Day

Sep 18, 2022 | 10:00 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Brown Bag Lunch Day last week showed once again the generosity of our community.

When all the donations were counted, the day raised $51,132.65 for the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub’s Brown Bag Lunch program. It provides healthy lunches for children in all three local school districts, ensuring no student has to go without a lunch.

Root Cellar executive director Melissa Mullis says early this school year they have fed as many as 1,200 kids a day, up from between 700 and 900 pre-COVID. The Root Cellar says $200 feeds one student for an entire year. Based on that, the money raised on Thursday will feed upwards of 250 students.

In an Instagram post after getting the final total was revealed, the Root Cellar says they are incredibly humbled at the kindness shown. They also thank CHAT 94.5 personalities for broadcasting live on-location at the 13th Avenue South Country Co-op throughout the day, and the Co-op team for hosting and fundraising at both food store locations.
