Queen’s funeral a holiday for federal workers, provinces to decide on other workplaces

The federal government is clarifying the announcement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today that Sept. 19 would be a federal holiday, coinciding with the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II.

Monday will be a holiday for federal government employees, but it will be up to provincial and territorial governments to declare the holiday for remaining workers.

Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan says employers in federally regulated industries, such as banks and airlines, are not required to recognize the holiday but may opt to do so.

The provinces will decide whether they too will declare the holiday for other workplaces and schools.

The Government of Alberta has not yet announced its decision.

P.E.I. says Sept. 19 will be treated like other statutory holidays for all provincially regulated employees and that provincial government offices and public schools will be closed. New Brunswick also says it will observe the national day of mourning by closing schools and government offices, but the holiday will be optional for private-sector businesses and employers.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says in a statement that Ontario will mark Sept. 19 as a provincial day of mourning in lieu of a provincial holiday.
