5 Ways to Stay Cool in Medicine Hat

Aug 19, 2022 | 2:00 AM

With the Summer weather still going strong, Tourism Medicine Hat is bringing you 5 ways to keep cool in the heat while still enjoying the city and surrounding areas.

1. Ice Cream

The tastiest way to stay cool during the Summer months is DEFINITELY ice cream. Medicine Hat has 3 amazing locations that offer a plethora of flavours for the whole family and each one has their unique style. They’re also all locally owned! Swirls Ice Cream, located near the Safeway on the Hill, is a staple. They offer some outdoor seating and always have a line of people waiting for their cup or cone! Swirls also has a truck that makes rounds around the city, so be sure to keep an eye out. It’s bright pink!

Camp Ice Cream prides itself on unique, handcrafted flavours and takes a more artisanal approach to ice cream. You can stop by their store to pick up your favourite flavour (shoutout to Cookie Butter) or order online. All of their ingredients are locally sourced, and they even have vegan options!

Moose and Squirrel Bistro is located in the heart of Downtown Medicine Hat on 2nd Street SE. They offer cones, sundaes, and floats. They offer two sizes – the Squirrel and the Moose. Their ice cream is also locally sourced, and they have vegan and lactose-free options available so everyone can partake.

2. Big Marble Go Centre

Formerly the Family Leisure Centre, the Big Marble Go Centre is located in Crescent Heights and houses a plethora of indoor activities for families! They offer general admission, but for frequent users there is the option to obtain a membership, which comes with discounts and other perks.

This is a great location for when the weather isn’t quite cooperating. It comes equipped with 2 indoor pools, the wave pool and lane pool, a skating rink, 4 basketball courts that can be rented and sectioned off AND a full gym on the upper level.

3. Spray Parks

It’s no secret that this city has no shortage of spray parks! From Redcliff to Ross Glen, we have 6 water parks open during the Summer. The outdoor spray parks are open to the public and free to use. During the Summer, they operate from 9am to 9pm. Each one is a little different in what they offer for entertainment, but they’re one of the best ways to enjoy the sun and stay cool.

The Redcliff Aquatic Centre is free for children 6 and under, but does have a small fee for older children and adults. There are free swims allotted on weekends though! You can view the centre schedule here.

· Lions Park

· Redcliff Aquatic Centre

· Kiwanis Central Park

· Ross Glen

· Saamis Rotary Park

· Strathcona Island Park

4. Elkwater

65 km outside of Medicine Hat is the idyllic scene of Elkwater. With copious trees and greenery, it’s easy to spend a weekend here – especially with the lake! Now is the ideal time to visit Elkwater. With the warm weather, the lake has warmed up and is perfect for swimming! There is a large beach area with a portion of the lake sectioned off for swimmers. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a playground and picnic area, along with any other amenities you might expect for a daytrip to the beach.

5. Echo Dale Regional Park

Medicine Hat describes Echo Dale Regional Park as a “hidden oasis” tucked away in the coulee – which it is! This park is only 15 minutes outside of Medicine Hat and boasts a multitude of activities. The most popular has to be the swim lake. Summer house are 11am to 7pm, every day of the week. You don’t even have to pack food or drink as it comes with a concession at the swim centre so you can travel as light as you want.

While there, you can also visit Echo Dale Farm or turn it into a camping trip at the Echo Dale Camp Grounds.
