MEDICINE HAT, AB – Police are investigating a report of a serious assault in the early morning hours of Aug. 16.

According to Medicine Hat Police Service, the alleged assault occurred at approximately 2 a.m. at a makeshift encampment on the riverbank of the South Saskatchewan River in Strathcona Island Park. Police responded to a reported disturbance between two groups at the encampment. A confrontation occurred between the groups, resulting in a 19-year-old man being taken to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital where he remains with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. An update from police says the man is expected to make a full recovery.

Staff Sgt. Jason Graham says this is an isolated incident, and there should be no concern to the public.

“The early indications suggest that there was knowledge, each party knew each other,” Graham says. “It wasn’t a random act at this point, all indications point towards this being a group of people from both sides that knew each other.”

Graham says the investigation is moving along smoothly and hopes to have more answers in the coming days.

The MHPS Major Crimes Unit is investigating. Anyone with information that could assist is asked to contact the Medicine Hat Police Service at 403-529-8481.
