Jeffery Straker says his songs take listeners back to their roots

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Folk pianist isn’t the most common label for an artist but it’s one Jeffery Straker has leaned into. For him, the piano gives his story driven-lyrics a roots vibe that helps the songs connect with the audience and vice-versa.

He says that seems to be happening with the songs on his latest recording, 2021’s Just Before Sunrise.

“I come from a small town in Saskatchewan originally and I have some of my songs sort of take people back to their roots if you will wherever their roots may be,” he says. “There’s a lot of sort of reflection in some of them although there’s a lot of looking forward and optimism in them too. and I find it seems that with the songs on this record they’re allowing people to insert themselves into them and come along for the ride and that’s what we hope for as creators, so it seems good.”

Straker will perform songs from Just Before Sunrise and previous works at Medicine Hat’s Liquid Concert & Event Venue on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

He’s previously played private house shows in our city and a handful of cafe concerts.

He remembers being pleased by the number of people who’d never heard of him who took a chance on a new artist, saying that’s a signal of a thriving local music culture.

“I make sure in my set lists I create a good mix of ballads and up-tempo songs to kind of keep the flow of the set going and typically people say to me the time goes by pretty quickly. So hopefully that’s what’s going to happen in Medicine Hat,” he says.

Tickets for tonight’s show can be reserved by calling the venue at 403-527-5170 or purchased at the door.
