5 Trails to Trek in Medicine Hat

Jul 29, 2022 | 3:15 AM

Medicine Hat is home to over 155km’s of paved trails that cater to walking, sightseeing, jogging, and cycling. If you and yours are up for an excursion, you can find a map of available trails on the City of Medicine Hat’s website. Here are our top five trails!

Before heading out to enjoy what nature has to offer, be sure to familiarize yourself with some trail rules and etiquette to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone.

1. Police Point Park Trails

This natural, 240-acre preserve is home to kilometres of walking and cycling trails winding through cottonwood forests and sagebrush. Some of the older cottonwood trees, affectionately referred to as “giants” are thought to be between 200 to 300 years old.

The trails here are approximately 5km and relatively mild as far as difficulty. Police Point Park offers a maze of trails, and if you head west you’ll encounter even more.

You can rent a GPS unit and do a geocache hunt while visiting this location!

2. Saratoga Trail

Saratoga Trail is located near Kin Coulee Park, which conveniently offers tons of parking space to leave your vehicle. The trail itself is scenic and just 2.4km so a great time for families with children who might not be up for a longer walk or bike ride. Stop by the National Historic Site plaque to read about the Metis Indigenous community who lived in this area.

3. Ross Creek Coulee Trail

The Ross Creek Coulee trails skirt the Ross Glen and Taylor areas. You can explore a series of winding trail systems of varying difficulty levels. The coulee side of the trails is 5.8km while the inner trails are 3km.

Parking and access to the trails are available at Ross Glen Towne Centre.

4. Trans-Canada Trail

The Trans=Canada Trail is a long one, and can take you through the city. Starting in Southeast Medicine Hat, follow the trail into the Ross Creek Coulee Trails to Strathcona Island Park. It will then take you along the South Saskatchewan River and under the Trans-Canada Bridge through a newer river trail toward Redcliff.

This trail would definitely be considered a day activity, but well worth the trek and a great way to take in all the scenic areas that Medicine Hat has to offer!

5. Devonian Trail

If you’re looking for a quick outing and a trail with low difficulty that’s close to Medicine Hat’s Historic Downtown, you should check out the Devonian Trail. This trail is only 2km and completely scenic.

You can park your car at Strathcona Island Park and begin your trek past the Athletic Park. The trail offers a great view of Lions Park from the top of the berm.
