Thousands attend Edmonton public mass with Pope Francis

Jul 26, 2022 | 5:16 PM

EDMONTON – Pope Francis prayed during a public mass in Edmonton today for a future where the history of violence and marginalization suffered by Indigenous peoples is never repeated.

The comments came a day after he apologized for abuses committed at Catholic-run residential schools during a visit to an Indigenous community south of the Alberta capital.

The Pope called on the young and old to move forward and dream together as he delivered his homily at the city’s football stadium.

About 65,000 free tickets were available for the mass but there were many empty seats and organizers estimated about 50,000 people attended.
