Environment Canada confirms tornado touched down near Redcliff

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Environment and Climate Change Canada has confirmed a tornado touched down just outside of Redcliff during last week’s storm.

Multiple homes, an RV, and grain bins were damaged by the EF-2 tornado according to a weather summary, with wind speeds hitting 190 km/hr. The EF-2 rating is preliminary and could change if more information becomes available.

The tornado touched ground 10 km south of Redcliff.

The weather agency says an on-site damage survey conducted by the Northern Tornadoes Project confirmed the tornado, as well as a downburst during the severe thunderstorm that passed through the area on July 18, 2022.

The downburst – a strong downward and outward wind system – caused widespread reports of damage to trees, power lines and structures in Redcliff because of the 150 km/hr winds.

More information will be provided by Environment Canada if it becomes available. Anyone with photos of the damage is asked to share them via email to storm@ec.gc.ca, or by tweeting with the hashtag #abstorm.
