Plans remain to celebrate Arena before demolition

Wheels continue to churn slowly on demolition of old Arena

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A new city council, a pandemic and changes at Invest Medicine Hat have all contributed to delays in the demolition of the Medicine Hat arena and construction of a new high-rise condominium on the Ash Avenue property.

The building has been closed for five years, and a deal to sell the property to NewRock Developments was first announced more than three years ago.

President and CEO Cam Ens admits they hoped to be further along in the project by this time, but it’s been simmering on the back burner since the civic election last October as the new council grew into their roles.

But a meeting this week has brought the parties back to the table again.

“We’re happy to say that we’ve met with the city recently and hope to move the ball forward and in the coming weeks hope to have something worked out with the city,” says Ens.

The file is going back to the City of Medicine Hat legal department and in the meantime Ens says they will continue with their due diligence as well.

Ens says they still plan on holding a public celebration and sendoff for the old Arena before demolition starts and construction of the Alto Living project begins.
