Suspect arrested in downtown Lethbridge hostage incident

UPDATE: The Lethbridge Police Service says charges are pending after a 40-year-old suspect was arrested in Thursday’s hostage situation.

Officers responded to a report of an armed female at a legal aid office on the 400 block of Fifth Street South in Lethbridge at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Police say a 54-year-old female employee was taken hostage and sustained life-threatening injuries. The LPS says the victim remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge police have apprehended a suspect in what officers called a “high-risk incident.”

Early in the afternoon on Thursday, police were called to the office of Lethbridge Legal Guidance on the 400 block of Fifth Street South.

Police say a female employee was taken hostage inside the building and sustained life-threatening injuries. She has been taken to hospital for treatment.

“While there is no longer an ongoing threat to public safety, all members of the public are directed to stay away from the area while the investigation is underway,” reads a media release from LPS.

Police are thanking the public for their cooperation. At the time of publication, officers remain on scene.

More details will be released when they are available, police say.
