Medicine Hat Kennel Club welcomes back annual dog show

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Kennel Club is hosting its annual dog show after it was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The competition is part of the Canadian Kennel Club circuit where dogs and their handlers earn points in group and breed categories, working their way up to championship levels.

Breeders from all over Canada came to participate in the four-day event, earning points for winning breed and group categories. Those points are combined to earn spots at the championship, and grand-championship levels.

“There are shows pretty much every weekend all over Canada,” said Kaitlin Glass, Medicine Hat Kennel Club secretary. “You keep collecting points as you go.”

Glass says being able to host these shows gives the local club the opportunity to get its name to a larger audience, and provides members with a networking opportunity.

“The reason people are usually showing their dogs is to prove that they are well bred and to the breed’s standard,” Glass said. “So you can connect with like-minded people and helps you find the right dogs to breed your dogs to.”

The show started Friday, July 8, 2022 and runs until 4 p.m. on Monday, July 11,2022. An average of 140 dogs are judged each day however, dogs can compete in more than one category.

8-year-old Elizabeth Hoit traveled from Lethbridge to show her mini wire-haired dachshund, Corona. The pair have been in competing in shows for the last two years and have gotten to know many of the regular competitors.

Corona earned Second in Group on Sunday, but Hoit has her eyes set on winning.

“I’ve been getting first in group yesterday and the day before that, so I’m hoping I can get first again,” said Hoit.
