MEDICINE HAT, AB– After officially opening up to the public earlier this year, there are some new additions to the city’s Towne Square.

Porta Potties have been added to the space.

The city says the decision came after hearing from business owners, the Medicine Hat Police and other residents about the need for public washrooms in the downtown.

The washrooms are open from 8a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, and for any events that occur in the Towne Square.

Outside of that timeframe , the city says the potties are locked up, and reopened again in the morning.

The porta potties also get cleaned three times a week.

Leah Prestayko, director of community development with the City of Medicine Hat says so far there have been no issues in terms of vandalism, and the response has been fairly positive.

” What we have heard so far, particularly from downtown business owners is that they are pleased that they have an option for where they can send people looking for bathrooms that they no longer have to turn people away without having a solution to provide them,” she said.

The porta potties are part of a pilot project that will look into the feasibility of having public washrooms in the downtown core.
