Heritage trails campaign aimed to increase respect and etiquette

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With summer now fully upon Medicine Hat, more and more people are expected to take advantage of the city’s numerous trails and pathways.

As a part of its parks and recreation master plan, the City of Medicine Hat is using the beginning of summer to refresh and educate Hatters on the rules and etiquette of using the Heritage Trail network.

Kara Brake, special projects coordinator with the City of Medicine Hat, says an updated trail map will be made available. Social media and decals on pathways will be used to remind the community to share the pathways and trails.

“We’re just really trying to educate people to use their bells, to call out if they’re passing somebody, slow down when they’re passing,” Brake says. “Use that respect that you’re not the only one on the trail, there are lots of other people, and lots of other kinds of people using the trails.”

Brake says with the addition of e-scooters to get people around town, now is the time to make sure everyone is staying safe out on the trails. Brake adds the city will be painting some city pathways as another way to increase respect and etiquette when sharing the paths.

“You’ll notice on Police Point Trail, there is a yellow line in the middle of the trail, which helps to educate people to stay on their right-hand side, like a road,” Brake says. “We are looking at adding some more of those this year as well.”
