'important for party and province'

Alberta Liberals launch leadership race

Jun 14, 2022 | 5:06 PM

While the governing UCP gets its leadership candidate sorted, the Alberta Liberal Party began is beginning its leadership race this week as well.

The new leader will take over from interim leader John Roggeveen, who has led the party since March 2021.

“I am proud of the work I have accomplished building the party over the last year, and I am excited to pass the torch to a new, permanent leader,” said Roggeveen. “Whoever they are, I am confident they will be successful in growing the Alberta Liberal movement. After three years of failed UCP leadership, Albertans are open to an honest, level-headed, evidence-based party that supports strong public services and pro-growth economic policy.”

Party president Helen McMenamin says the race is an important one for the party and province.

“Albertans are tired of bad management and bad behaviour,” says McMenamin. “They are looking for a principled and pragmatic alternative. This leadership race will be a chance to show Albertans we’re the party they are looking for.”

The Liberals’ race will take place over the next four months, with Aug. 12 the close of nominations. Sept. 12 is the cut-off for membership sales, with voting between Sept. 19-24. The result will be revealed Sept. 25.

The voting system is one member, one vote, and will be entirely online.
