Public invited to COVID stimulus project celebration at Towne Square

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat will celebrate its 18 COVID stimulus projects with a public event at one of the most visible and talked about projects on Tuesday.

The ceremony will take place at noon at Towne Square.

The vacant lot at 603 First St. SE was redeveloped and an outdoor event space was created as part of a larger waterfront district enhancement plan.

Other large projects included additional serviced sites and comfort cabins at the Gas City Campground and upgrades to Athletic Park.

Smaller projects included renewal of infrastructure at city facilities and a raised starting gate at the BMX track.

On Tuesday, there will be a short program and ribbon-cutting at noon and food trucks will be on-site. Prior to the public event, councillors will tour some of the projects.

Nearly $20 million worth of projects were funded by the Government of Canada’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) COVID-19 Resilience Stream and the Province of Alberta’s Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP).

Through the ICIP program, the city was allowed to reallocate $10.9 million of funding originally approved under the Public Transit Stream to support 13 new projects. The city was also approved for five projects through the MSP and received a total of $7.5 million in funding to support the projects. Both programs were announced in 2020 to offset economic and employment challenges as a result of the pandemic.
