Amplify Medicine Hat – RENŪ by Jeska Rabbit

Jun 6, 2022 | 10:57 AM

Local business is the cornerstone of Medicine Hat, that’s why we’re asking you to Amplify Medicine Hat by nominating local businesses we can highlight and support.

Jessica Lawrence is a Paramedical Permanent Makeup (PMU) artist. Her newest business, RENŪ by Jeska Rabbit has been around for 1 year but the journey to get to this point began over a decade ago. Prior to getting into permanent makeup, Jessica had been tattooing for over 10 years, specializing in realism.

“I’ve always been an artist. I did go to Medicine Hat College and University of Alberta to study art and design.”

Despite her beginnings on the more traditional side of art and design, Jessica was always interested in pursuing permanent makeup. Clients frequently asked if she could just do their eyebrows, but microblading is a completely different technique with different tools from what is used to tattoo the body. As demand increased, Jessica took a microblading course 3 years ago to meet her clients’ needs.

During the pandemic, she saw her mother deal with skin cancer.

“She had to go and get skin cancer removed on her lip,” Jessica remembers, “She’d had some frozen off before so she didn’t think much of it. When she was at the hospital that day… the margin grew a lot bigger than we thought.” By the end of surgery and reconstruction, Jessica saw firsthand the toll scarring can take on a person’s mental health and the despair the situation left her mother with, Jessica realized she could fix that.

“I can fix that,” she told her mother. “I can disguise that. It’s not a problem.” Seeing the beginning of hope restored and knowing she could give someone that was the push she needed. Scars, as small as they can be, have a huge impact on an individual’s confidence and weigh heavily on their mind.

Jessica has taken courses with Jody Stoski, who runs the Paramedical Tattoo Academy in Calgary, and is ready to heal with tattoos. She covers everything from removing scars and restoring pigment to areola restoration and gender-affirming procedures in Medicine Hat – previously only available as close as Calgary.

Nominators had a lot to say about RENŪ by Jeska Rabbit and how she helps individuals feel whole again:

“She provides people with a service that can restore their self confidence. She has helped breast cancer survivors and is trans friendly-associated and gender affirming tattoos.”

“She provides services for those who are previvors and survivors of mastectomy, services to the transgender community, scar camouflage for people who are inhibited by their scars- from surgery, self harm, childbirth, acne – empowering people and women in all age ranges. Jessica Lawrence is an entrepreneur and educator within her accreditations, lives and has her business (2nd business in the Hat) a Medicine Hat College degree alumni, welcomes and desires to helping people feel good about themselves.”
