MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Miywasin Friendship Centre is almost ready for another season of its Miywasin Story Tour.

The tour includes stops at the Saamis Tepee and the nearby Saamis Archaeological Site.

“The tepee here is something that’s just such a landmark in Medicine Hat we believe that we want to share the knowledge of our culture with other people who live in Medicine Hat and this site is for everybody,” says Brenda Mercer, cultural coordinator at the centre. “The history that it holds with the archaeological site is very important to all of us.”

The tour will also go to Saratoga Park. It was designated a municipal historic area by the City of Medicine Hat in 2020.

“We’re going to talk about how Saratoga Park was used for the Métis settlement there,” Mercer says. “And then we’re going to go back to the centre and have bannock and tea.”

Mercer and other Miywasin staff will take turns sharing the history of the different sites.

She says the tour is about three hours. The first one is scheduled for July 9 with another to take place in August.

Miywasin has partnered with the Medicine Hat Public Library for a Saamis Tepee tour this Sunday. All available spots on that tour have been claimed.
