'She is our head of state'

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Long-time Monarchist League of Canada member Bill Cocks of Medicine Hat was among those who rose early this morning to watch the pageantry of the Queen’s platinum jubilee from London.

Cocks said it was quite the spectacle, and noted members of the Royal Family rode horses given to them by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

While some may question the attention given to the Monarchy, Cocks says traditions like this are an important part of our history.

“She is our head of state,” says Cocks.

“I think it’s unfortunate we don’t pay more attention to our history and to our constitution,” says Cocks, adding that her representatives open Parliament and the constitutional monarchy is the basis for our constitutional way of life.

Cocks is happy the City of Medicine Hat has joined the celebration by illuminating the Finlay Bridge in purple each night until June 7.

But he would have liked to see them also light purple beacons tonight, as they’re doing in Ottawa and provincial capitals, in a tradition dating back to Queen Victoria.

There is a guest book in the lobby at city hall well-wishers to send greetings to the Queen until June 17.

The village of Ralston is also having a street party this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the celebrations
