MEDICINE HAT, AB – Travis Toews is the first official candidate to register to run for the leadership of the United Conservative Party in Alberta.

Toews who most recently served as Treasury Board president and finance minister announced his candidacy at his home in northern Alberta alongside family and friends.

“I am inspired by our movement, which is why I ran in 2019, and I believe that Albertans and our members can be inspired again,” says Toews.

Toews also says he is running to lead the party back to the foundations that united them adding “it’s time to lay aside our differences to focus on our shared vision– a hopeful future for our children and grandchildren, on the foundation of a free and prosperous Alberta.”

Born and raised in Alberta, Toews spent nearly two decades as a CPA and CMA in a public accounting firm. He also manages a family cattle ranching business and an environmental services company in northern Alberta.

He was first elected as the MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti in 2019. He looks forward to connecting with Albertans from across the province to discuss the values that matter to them, and what they expect from their leaders.

As of mid-afternoon Tuesday, Toews is the only declared candidate registered on the Elections Alberta website. Former ildrose leader Danielle Smith has already announced her intention to run. Brian Jean, another former leader of the Wildrose Party, is also expected to run for leader of the UCP.
